PROHIBITED ARTICLES (EXAMPLE)

(1) Narcotic drugs, stimulants, marijuana, psychotropic substances, MDMA, designated drugs.

(2) Firearms such as pistols, revolvers and machine guns, and bullets or parts thereof.

(3) Explosives, gunpowder, materials for chemical weapons, germs such as anthrax.

(4) Counterfeit, altered or imitated coins, bank notes or securities, and forged credit cards.

(5) Obscene or immoral materials, and child pornography.

(6) Articles which infringe upon intellectual property rights. (patent, utility model, design, trademark, copyright, neighboring right, etc.)

RESTRICTED ARTICLES (EXAMPLE)

(1) Hunting guns, air guns, swords.

(2) Internationally protected endangered animals and plants, or their products. (crocodiles, cobras, turtles, ivory, musk, cactus, etc.)

(3) Live animals and plants, meat products (including sausage), vegetables, fruits, rice. * Please go through quarantine inspection prior to customs inspection.

Description

When bringing in gold bullion or gold products, please be sure to declare them to the Customs regardless of the weight.

Duty-Free Allowance (for each person, other than crew members) Only the personal effects or unaccompanied articles found to be used personally are duty free within the ranges below

(2) Cigarette only: 200 cigarettes, cigar only: 50 cigars, heat-not-burn tobacco product only: 10 individual packaging boxes or packages, others only: 250 g

(3) 2 ounces of perfumes (1 ounce = approx. 28 ml)

(4) Other articles Articles with a total overseas market value not exceeding 200,000 yen

* There is no duty-free allowance for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products for those under 20 years old

* The overseas market value means a normal retail price (purchase price) abroad

* When the price of an article exceeds 200,000 yen, duties and/or taxes will be imposed on its entire value

* For articles excluding alcoholic beverages, tobacco products and perfumes, articles with a total overseas market value of 10,000 yen or less per item are duty free in principle

* As for children under 6 years old, duty-free allowances are limited to the articles owned for their personal use

Description

Commercial goods and samples are subject to customs duties since they are not provided for personal use. Also, depending on the monetary value, you may need to complete the same import procedure as that for general import cargoes

An illicit drug “courier“ is a serious crime. This act is severely punished in Japan as well as overseas. You are held responsible for carried articles, even for items you have been requested from someone else to bring into Japan. You cannot escape with excuses such as “I didn't know“ or “I wasn't sure“

Never keep suspicious packages from others

Description

In the following cases, select “Yes“ and fill in “DECLARATION OF CARRYING OF MEANS OF PAYMENT, ETC.“ separately when entering Japan, and submit it to a custom officer

・The total amount of currency and coins, checks (including travelers checks), promissory notes and securities to carry exceeds 1 million yen or equivalent

・The weight of gold bullion (90% or more of purity) to carry exceeds 1 kg

Note when bringing in gold bullion, etc., please select “Yes“ for “1. (3) Gold bullion or products of gold“ on Declaration information (3/8), and declare to the Customs regardless of the weight

Description

“Unaccompanied articles“ refer to items you have sent by mail or delivery service from travel destinations, such as move packages, belongings that have become useless at travel destinations and souvenirs, apart from personal effects to carry with you.

You cannot declare unaccompanied articles after entering Japan (returning to Japan). Please be sure to declare them.
